Pilgrims have been travelling over high passes from India and other parts of Asia to Mt. Kailash or Kailash Mansarovar Yatra for some 5,000 years. Mt. Kailash, one of the highest mountains in Tibet (22,022 ft/6,714 m), is claimed to be the apex of Hindu religious pilgrimage sites. Mansarovar Lake, located at an altitude of 14,950 ft (4,558 m) is said to be the highest freshwater lake in the world. Both are certainly difficult to reach, with variable and extreme weather conditions making the going even more difficult.
